Hunky Dory is a sunny neighborhood spot in Crown Heights serving up colorful American fare, with a special focus on sustainability.
The mastermind behind it all is Claire Sprouse, SF bartender and restaurateur turned Brooklynite. She has spent much of her career thinking up ways to reduce waste in bars and restaurants, and she’s brought this savvy brilliance to the food and drink at this local favorite. Sprouse brought on chef Kirstyn Brewer (a Dallas native and an Eater Young Gun nominee) and the duo has been whipping up some of the most delicious, eclectic bites you’ll find in the borough.
Hunky Dory is in the business of spreading joy, so they offer a Day-Time Menu, Mid-Day Menu, and Nighttime Menu. So whether you’re in the mood for a Soft Scrambled Egg Sandwich with curried caramelized onions, arugula, cheddar, and chile mayo or Fried Pork with baked apples, chicories, celery root, & honey mustard, you’re good to go any time of the day. And while chilling with your quarantine crew, you can continue to embrace the Hunky Dory lifestyle by recreating some of their most popular plates. Follow along to learn about how to reduce your waste while making 3 of hunky’s own recipes. #hunkyathome
Winter Citrus Salad
This citrus salad is everything you want when it’s February and it seems like everyone’s on vacation except for you. It looks and tastes like a tropical sunset: bright magenta beet yoghurt layered with a symphony of oranges and grapefruit. Topped with horseradish and sumac. Don’t skip this.
A Very Good Side Salad
This fanciful plate of little gem lettuces, chicories, and vermont cheddar is topped with dried herb buttermilk dressing and dusted with breadcrumbs. It captures summer nostalgia to a tee: you’re at a pool party, there’s watermelon, squirt guns, and everyone’s hands are wet from the pool so now the chips are kind of soggy. But make it chic.
Celery Root Sandwich
If a beer-battered fish sandwich went on a yoga retreat and became a vegetarian, you’d get this white bread sando dabbed in mustard and chock-full of celeriac (a.k.a. celery root) and slaw. Golden brown, flaky on the outside and velvety on the inside. This bad boy couldn’t be more on point.
This might be the best happy hour in the city (aside from Applebee’s $1 drinks). Hunky happy hour is 3pm-7pm everyday, as well as 12am-2am Fridays and Saturdays, and all day on Mondays. They’re not messing around. And they’ve made it extra special for all of us right now. Hunky Dory is delivering cocktails because you know we all need a drink (or four) during this quarantine. Deliveries are every Friday, so you’re welcome for giving you something to look forward to!
